Behind every flight lies a face; behind every exile, a fate. The Exile Museum tells stories of loss and new beginnings, uncertainty and departure, persecution and survival. It explores exile during the Nazi era and today, and invites visitors to reflect on the fragility of freedom and democracy in Germany and around the world.

The Exile Museum will soon open in the historic residence at Fasanenstraße 24 in Berlin-Charlottenburg.

About the media partnership between ullstein bild and the Exile Museum Foundation

With the opening of the Exile Museum Foundation’s first exhibition on Fasanenstraße From here, two institutions connected by photography and its history are joining forces. Today’s Ullstein photographic collection at ullstein bild traces its origins to the Ullstein publishing house, which was founded in 1877 by Leopold Ullstein and will therefore celebrate its 150th anniversary next year, looking back on an eventful history. Since then, Ullstein has collected, produced, commissioned, preserved, and printed photographs – for publication in its successful magazines and newspapers and with groundbreaking implications for the history of photography.

With the rise of National Socialism and the upheaval of 1933, a period of flight and exile began for the Ullstein family, numerous employees, and the company’s photographers. This exile of people who had lived and worked in Berlin for many years gave rise to its own new stories. “Loss and new beginnings, uncertainty and new starts, persecution and survival” are themes explored by the Exile Museum Foundation and at ullstein bild.
